Critical Questions
For Thinking Beyond a Single Text

By Katie Kelly, Lester Laminack, and Vivian Vasquez

What do Critical readers ask themselves as they read a new text?

  • How does the text position the reader?

  • Who is included or featured in the text/image? How are they represented? Why? Who benefits? Who is harmed?

  • What information is featured? Is it presented as “the” truth, or does it make clear there are other perspectives to consider? Who benefits from this portrayal of information? Who is harmed or made invisible?

  • Who/what is excluded from the text? Why? How does this exclusion position who/what is included? Why? Who benefits? Who is harmed?

  • What are the counter narratives?

  • What could be a more accurate/complete representation of the story? Where might I find those alternate perspectives?

  • What questions might an alternate perspective answer?
